Case Study - Philip
Engineering Manufacture

WES Ltd

What does an average day look like for you?

My day consists of building and testing control systems and panels for Chemical Dosing Systems.  These are manufactured from drawings, which will be discussed and the work planned before starting.  I work with the electrical side of the system.  I have to plan, install and wire in elements such as relays, connectors, motors, timers, indicator lamps and maybe PLCs.  The system needs to be commissioned before going to the customer to ensure that it is working correctly.

What personal qualities do you think are important to do your job?

To enable me to do my role you need to have a good work ethic and confidence, as well as creativity be able to visualise the jobs that need doing or problems that need solving. You need to have an eye for detail as well as intuition and to be able to think critically.

How did you first become interested in Engineering?

I first became interested in engineering whilst I was at school.  I remember having to design and build an outdoor lamp for a project and using a lathe to produce a component for it.  My Dad encouraged me to pursue it at college and I loved it.  I even got a distinction out of it.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a good way to gain access to a company sector you want to work in and become a valued member of the team.  It also enables you to gain practical and relevant work experience, as the saying goes “Earn while you learn!”  My apprenticeship has also helped me on a personal level as I have been able to use skills that I have learnt at work and during my time at SETA for DIY projects at home!
